Human-Centred AI Transformation Toolkit

Design AI-supported work without losing judgment, accountability, or the value of automation.

“Human in the loop” is not a complete operating model. This toolkit helps leaders and cross-functional teams determine what AI may do, what people must still review or own, how the workflow should change, and what controls and implementation conditions are required before pilot or operational use.

The Missing Step

Move from a selected AI use case to a workable operating design.

Many organizations assess whether an AI idea is valuable and feasible, then move directly into a pilot. The difficult operating questions are left unresolved.

  • What authority should AI have?
  • What remains a human responsibility?
  • Which outputs require review?
  • When is supervision more practical than reviewing every case?
  • What exceptions must be escalated?
  • Who can intervene, override, or stop the workflow?
  • How will roles, handoffs, approvals, and capabilities change?
  • Who remains accountable for the result?

Toolkit Outcomes

What the toolkit helps you produce.

  • A defined AI-supported task, decision, or workflow segment
  • A recommended Human Control Pattern
  • Clear permitted and prohibited AI authority
  • Defined human review, supervision, decision, and accountability requirements
  • Validation, monitoring, escalation, and intervention controls
  • A current-to-future AI Workflow Impact Map
  • Role, responsibility, workload, and capability impacts
  • Adoption-readiness conditions
  • Measures, dependencies, and prioritized implementation actions
Five practical outcomes from the Human Oversight and AI Workflow Design Toolkit

Four Human Control Patterns

Choose the relationship between AI execution and human responsibility.

Human Control is designed to enable confident automation—not to preserve unnecessary manual work.

Human-Led

AI supports information gathering, analysis, or preparation while a person independently evaluates the situation and owns the decision or action.

Human-Reviewed

AI creates a proposed output or action that a designated person validates and approves before it becomes operational, external, or consequential.

Human-Supervised

AI performs recurring work within defined boundaries while people monitor performance, review samples and exceptions, and intervene when thresholds are reached.

AI-Executed with Guardrails and Escalation

AI completes low-risk, well-understood work without routine pre-approval while people define the boundaries, monitor performance, and retain intervention and shutdown authority.

How It Works

A practical three-step method.

Move from an oversight decision to a workable future-state design and implementation path.

1

Assess Human Control

Define the specific work unit, score the six oversight dimensions, apply override rules, assess control readiness, and confirm the appropriate Human Control Pattern.

2

Design the workflow

Map the current and future workflow, assign AI authority, clarify human responsibilities, identify role impacts, and design validation, monitoring, escalation, and intervention controls.

3

Prepare to implement

Confirm adoption conditions, measures, dependencies, accountable owners, and implementation actions before the use case moves into pilot or operational use.

Built for Real Operating Decisions

Use the toolkit when the operating model is still unclear.

  • A use case has been selected but the operating model is unclear
  • “Human in the loop” has been proposed without defining the control
  • AI will draft, recommend, classify, route, initiate, or execute work
  • The organization needs to redesign roles and handoffs
  • A pilot requires clearer controls and readiness conditions
  • Leadership needs a defensible record of the design decision
  • A consultant needs a repeatable way to facilitate the discussion

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about the toolkit.

Is this an AI compliance toolkit?

No. It helps structure business, workflow, governance, Human Control, and adoption decisions. It does not certify compliance or replace legal, privacy, security, regulatory, or technical review.

Does it require a specific AI platform?

No. It can be used with a proposed use case, an active pilot, an enterprise AI tool, a vendor solution, or an internally developed capability.

Is this only for high-risk AI?

No. Low-risk use cases also benefit from clear authority, ownership, workflow design, monitoring, and escalation. The level of control should be proportionate to the work.

Can a team use it in a workshop?

Yes. The editable canvas and workflow map support facilitated working sessions. The Excel workbooks provide structured scoring, evidence, actions, and decision records.

Which licence should I choose?

Choose the Standard Organizational Licence for internal use within one legal organization. Choose the Consultant and Facilitator Licence when using the toolkit in paid work with external clients.

Are updates included?

The purchase provides the files available at the time of purchase. Any future update policy will be communicated through the product listing or directly to purchasers.
